Professional Life
He smuggled drugs in large cities like Florida throughout his early years in the 1980s. Miguel led the Guadalajara Cartel, which monopolized the Mexican drug trade until the end of the 1980s.
DEA Special Agent Enrique was assigned to Guadalajara’s residency during his years there and worked through informants. He then uncovered and demolished numerous marijuana plantations in the neighborhood. He even demolished 1,000 hectares of marijuana fields with the help of soldiers in 1984, and these fields were subsequently valued at $8 billion.
He was ready to reveal Miguel’s drug trafficking ties when he was abducted by Miguel.
Enrique was subsequently kidnapped by several of Miguel’s police officers, and he was slain on February 9 after a hole was drilled into his head with an iron. He had already been interrogated for more than 30 hours. His body was later discarded in the state of Michoacán.
This sparked one of the DEA’s largest homicide investigations, which became known as Operation Leyenda.
Miguel had to keep a low profile as a result of this, as he has also murdered a number of journalists. He and his family then relocated to Guadalajara. Soon after, on April 8, 1989, he was captured and charged by US and Mexican authorities with the death of a DEA agent and narcotics trafficking.
He was still a big trafficker in Mexico while incarcerated, and he used cell phones to keep his operation running. He was later moved to Altiplano Maximum Security in 1993. He subsequently sought, in the year 2019, to serve the remainder of his prison sentence at home, but the court in Mexico City denied his plea. Narcos: Mexico, a Netflix series based on his life, is based on his story.
