Profession and Career

After enrolling at UCLA, Sigi began playing professional soccer in 1972. Until 1975, he was the Bruins’ starting midfielder. For the first two seasons after his arrival, the UCLA Bruins were able to finish second.

Later in his senior year, he was chosen to the All-Far-West team in 1975. He was UCLA’s 11th all-time assist leader at the end of his career.

In 1975, he started coaching at Bishop Montgomery High School and later founded the South Bay Vikings. From 1977 to 1979, he was an assistant coach at UCLA under Steve Gay. Gay was named head coach after he left in 1980. In 1984, he was named Coach of the Year by Soccer America magazine. He was the head coach at UCLA until 1999.

In 1999, he was named head coach of the Los Angeles Galaxy of Major League Soccer, a position he held until 2004. With the Los Angeles Galaxy, he concluded his career with a 79–53–32 overall record and a 16–7–3 playoff record. In 2009, he became the first coach of Seattle Sounders FC. In 2016, he departed the club after being replaced by assistant coach Brian and went on to work as an ESPN studio commentator. On July 27, 2017, Sigi was named the new coach of the LA Galaxy. After a poor 2018 season, he resigned from Galaxy in September 2018.
