Doctors told veteran Jim Avila in late 2017 that he would need a new kidney due to diabetes-related kidney failure. It was a race for him because he needed to find a kidney donor and transplant it within three months or else he would have to go on dialysis.
Jim’s youngest brother, Jaie Avila, also works as a television news reporter. Jim accepted Jaie’s offer to donate one of his kidneys.
The doctor then immediately schedules the surgeries. Jim had a kidney transplant in April of this year, and he is now recovering from the procedure.
While undergoing surgery, Jim told TV Newser that he felt fortunate to have the support of his family and friends.
After returning home from the kidney transplant, Jim tweeted his gratitude to his brother, writing that his brother Jaie was the donor and gave a moving account of his transplant.
