Karen joined the school band in 1964, while she was a senior at Downey High School. Bruce Gifford, her conductor, gave her the opportunity to perform the glockenspiel there. She persuaded her parents to purchase a $300 ‘Ludwig set’ for her. After that, she began training with Frankie Chavez. Karen picked up the technique of drumming quickly and was able to play some really difficult time signatures, such as the 5/4 in Dave Brubeck’s “Take Five.”
