However, James Fitzgerald’s most important role in apprehending Theodore John Kaczynski, a.k.a. the Unabomber, had a negative impact on his personal life and ended his first marriage to Ellie Fitzgerald.
Parted After The Unabomber Case
While the country rejoiced and celebrated the end of the protracted search for one of the most wanted criminals, Fitzgerald battled with his first wife, Ellie, and their failing marriage upon coming home.
The pair married in 1976 and went on to have three boys. But regrettably, his duties as an FBI agent, which took up much of his time, did not mesh well with his relationship with Ellie, and once the Unabomber case was resolved, the couple split up.
In response to a tweet in January 2018, the FBI agent stated that the divorce occurred after Unabom, and it was a trying period for the entire family. Additionally, he claimed that despite their divorce, the two still get along and co-parent their children.
Love Found Its Way Again
Fitzgerald moved forward from the divorce by being engaged to Natalie Schilling, a professor of linguistics at Georgetown University. Following the premiere of the American television series Manhunt, which revealed the Unabomber case, the pair gained notoriety in 2017.
In the drama, Lynn Collins plays Natalie, and Sam Worthington plays Fitzgerald, who assists Natalie in deciphering Kaczynski’s writing.
End to The Unabomber Case
In 1995, the FBI was able to decipher the code and track down Kaczynski, an American terrorist, and mathematical prodigy, putting a stop to the horror that had started in 1978.
James Fitzgerald, a forensic linguist, made a significant contribution to bringing the nearly two-decade-long search to an end by pointing the FBI to the criminal through his examination of the Unabomber Manifesto.
The terrorist’s brutal blast had already left 24 people injured and 3 people dead when the FBI finally caught him.
In actuality, the Unabomber investigation was considered the most costly one to that point.
