The ABC News correspondent was born in Peoria, Illinois, USA on February 6, 1972. His parents are immigrants from Nigeria. Growing up in a low-income family made Steve’s childhood difficult. They used to make ends meet by using food stamps. His mother, who worked in the hospital cafeteria, struggled to feed the family of seven.

Poverty brought many difficulties into Steve’s life. But it did one thing for him: it inspired him to make things better for himself and his family when he grew up.

So he worked hard and graduated from Peoria High School. He continued his education at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Broadcast Journalism.
