Sam has Australian nationality, but he is of Chinese ethnicity because he was born into a Chinese family. Sam was raised in Victoria by his parents and a younger brother named Chuck. From his school days, he had a strong interest in football. As a result, he began his football career in his adolescence.

Sam was a member of the Australian Rules Football Under-19 Team for his club Collingwood Football Club in 1991. Sam’s exceptional athletic abilities earned him opportunities to play for local football teams in Tasmania and Victoria.
