Ricky Gervais is an English comedian, actor, director, and writer. He is best known for co-creating, co-writing, and starring in The Office, a British mockumentary comedy on television.

Ricky Dene Gervais was born on June 25, 1961, in Reading, England. His father, Lawrence Raymond Gervais, was a Franco-Ontarian who served as a foreign serviceman in England during WWII. Eva Sophia née House, his mother, was an English-born housewife. Ricky was the youngest of his parents’ four children, with two older brothers, Larry and Robert, and an elder sister, Marsha.

Gervais formed Seona Dancing with his friend Bill Macrae in June 1982 while studying at UCL. Many of the songs they co-wrote were sung by Gervais while Macrae played the piano. They eventually recorded a demo tape of sixteen songs and signed with London Records.

He contributed comic skits to ‘Bruiser,’ a BBC Two comedy sketch show, in 2000. Later that year, he started appearing on Channel 4’s extremely successful ‘The 11 O’Clock Show’ on a regular basis.

Following his success on ‘The 11 O’Clock Show,’ Gervais began hosting his own chat show, ‘Meet Ricky Gervais,’ on Channel 4. Each show aired on Friday evenings and featured two famous guests. The show, however, was only on from September 22 to October 27, 2000.

In 2014, Gervais began writing the story for ‘Special Correspondents,’ which he later directed and acted in. Filming began in May of 2015. The remake of the 2009 French comedy ‘Envoyés très spéciaux’ was released in April 2016. It received mostly negative feedback.

In addition to ‘Special Correspondents,’ Gervais wrote, directed, acted in, and produced ‘David Brent: Life on the Road,’ which was released to mixed reviews in August 2016. His next film, ‘Blazing Samurai,’ in which he plays Ika Chu, a malevolent cat, will be out soon.
