Millicent Simmonds is an American deaf actress best known for her role in the film Wonderstruck, which launched her career as a successful actress. Millicent Simmonds, 14, was born in Utah, United States, in 2003. Every year on March 1st, she celebrates her birthday. Simmonds is not the only child in her family, as she has four siblings.
Simmonds’ hearing ability was lost at the age of 12 months due to a medication overdose. Emily Simmonds, her mother, had to learn American Sign Language so that she and other family members could communicate with Millicent. Simmonds began her education at Jean Massieu School for the Deaf, where she was able to participate in a drama group.
She was given the opportunity to perform at the Utah Shakespeare Festival in Cedar City after finishing sixth grade.

Millicent Simmonds was given the opportunity to make her film debut in Hollywood, which helped her gain name and fame in the industry. She made her breakthrough performance in the critically acclaimed film Wonderstruck. She played a twelve-year-old deaf girl living in New Jersey in 1927 who runs away from home and wanders through the New York Museum of Natural History. Color the World, her previous solo film before Wonderstruck, was released in 2015.
Millicent received numerous accolades and awards for her outstanding performance in the movies. In 2017, she received the Pauline Kael Breakout Award from the Florida Film Critics Circle, the Saturn Award for Best Performance by a Younger Actor, the Seattle Film Critics Society Award for Best Youth Performance, and the Washington D.C. Area Film Critics Association Award for Best Youth Performance.
Furthermore, she never imagined herself as one of Hollywood’s finest actresses. She wished to be a cop or a firefighter as a child. She is an inspiration to other people with disabilities who want to be recognized for their work.
