If you’re unfamiliar with Maurice Hines, he is the older brother of late singer Gregory Hines. Maurice is an American director, actor, singer, and tap-dance choreographer who first appeared on Broadway in 1954 with The Girl in Pink Tights. As a choreographer, he co-directed and choreographed the national tour of Satchmo, Havana Night in Cuba, and The Red Shoes, an all-Latino production.
Maurice’s feature film debut, The Cotton Club, has remained his sole feature film credit to date. He appeared as a guest star on the gay comedy Will & Grace, as well as on Love, Sidney, the first television show to feature a central gay character.
Aside from that, he created, choreographed, and directed Yo Alice, a fantasy staged in 2000 for a workshop and a reading at the Triad Theatre in 2007. He advanced his career even further by directing Ella, First Lady of Song, a musical tribute to Ella Fitzgerald. It stars Freda Payne, a blues/jazz singer, and has gone through three developmental out-of-town tryouts, including one at The Crossroads Theatre.
Relationship Status: Single?
Accepting himself as gay was not difficult for Maurice. He has always been open about his sexual orientation and has never tried to hide it. On Metro Weekly on March 29, 2006, he gushed about how he embraced his sexuality.
I’ve always believed in (being gay). It wasn’t difficult for me, even when I was a young man living in rough neighborhoods. Because it is negative, I do not tolerate (intolerance). And anything negative in my life has to go.
While Maurice’s sexual orientation is not a secret, he has mastered the art of keeping his romantic flings hidden. He did, however, mention that the first man he ever dated was Gregory’s football buddy.
Since then, the choreographer has avoided discussing any of his gay relationships. However, given his age of 74, some speculate that Maurice is already married. However, there is no definitive information on his marital status.
Biography, Age, and Family
Maurice was born on December 13, 1943, to Alma Iola and Maurice Robert Hines Sr. His father, Maurice Hines Sr., was a dancer, musician, and actor, so he carries the blood of multi-talents. His brother, Gregory Hines, was the lead singer in the rock band Severance and had a net worth of $6 million.
Gregory, sadly, died in August 2009 from liver cancer. Tappin’ Thru Life: An Evening with Maurice Hines was Maurice’s 2013 tribute to his late brother at the Cutler Majestic Theatre.
Meanwhile, he told The New York Times that he hadn’t talked to his brother in ten years. The play depicted the separation and eventual reconciliation of siblings. Maurice performed a soft-shoe tap dance that he had learned with his brother from their tap teacher Henry LeTang before the play began.
