Amy was born in Long Island, New York on April 13, 1957. Her parents, George and Dorothy Goodman, raised her and her brother, David Goodman. Her father was an ophthalmologist, and her mother was a social worker and a literature teacher.
Her father died in October 1998, and her mother died in October 2009 at the age of 79. Despite their passing, Amy pays tribute to her parents in her articles and expresses her affection for them.
