Adam Shankman was born on November 27, 1964, in Los Angeles, California, to Phyllis and Ned Shankman. He grew up alongside his 1968-born sister, Jennifer.

Adam came from an upper-middle-class family. Ned Shankman, his father, was an entertainment lawyer and manager. Meanwhile, his mother, Phyllis, was a licensed Gestalt therapist.
