Two police officers were walking around the ex-federal prosecutor’s house one day as his wife was pushing their son on a swing in the backyard. They appeared to have come after the patriarch of the Gowdy family began receiving threats to keep a watchful eye on them.
Along with federal marshals camped out for a few weeks, the police frequently stayed in their houses. According to reports, there was a man who kept showing up at the neighborhood courthouse and insisted he needed to speak with Mr. Gowdy. He would claim to know the schools that Terri and Trey’s kids attended when the authorities turned him down.

When offered the chance to accept a nomination to the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals by the White House, Trey once told the Herald-Journal that his wife Terri had persuaded him to decline. She allegedly predicted that he would become depressed and disenchanted with his work. This was true despite rumors that Gowdy had his eye on a position as a federal judge.
