Thelma Riley’s Relationship with Ozzy Osbourne
John Michael “Ozzy” Osbourne was briefly married to Thelma Riley. He was born in the Birmingham suburb of Aston. He grew up with five siblings and was given the nickname “Ozzy” while still in elementary school. After hearing the Beatles’ 1963 song ‘She Loves You,’ he was encouraged to pursue a career in music. The Polka Tulk Blues Band was created in the late 1960s by Osbourne, guitarist and lyricist Geezer Butler, guitarist Tony Iommi, and drummer Bill Ward. The band’s name was changed several times over the next few months, first to Earth, then to Black Sabbath in August 1969. They released their self-titled debut album a year later.
He was engaged in the creation of the group’s eight studio albums between 1970 and 1979. After being fired from Black Sabbath in 1979, Ozzy Osbourne chose to pursue a solo career. Osbourne has 11 studio albums, five live albums, seven compilation albums, nine video albums, and five EPs to his credit as a solo artist. In 2013, he rejoined the band to record 13, which was to be their final album.
In 1971, Thelma Riley met Ozzy Osbourne for the first time. He was still in the early stages of his profession at the time, and she was working at the Rum Runner, a nightclub in Birmingham. They met there, and a whirlwind romance developed quickly. They married in July of that year.
As Black Sabbath rose to prominence as one of the most popular and influential bands of the 1970s, Osbourne, popularly known as “The Prince of Darkness,” became notorious for his extravagant lifestyle. He has spent the majority of his adult life abusing booze and narcotics. “I get high, I get screwed up… what the hell’s wrong with getting fucked up?” he said in a 1978 interview with Sounds. If so many individuals have to get screwed up, there must be something wrong with the system.” His bandmates have stated over the years that while they all had substance usage problems, Osbourne was by far the biggest offender. In fact, it was for this reason that he left Black Sabbath in 1979.
Ozzy Osbourne’s substance misuse had an impact on his personal life as well and was the primary cause of his and Thelma’s divorce. The relationship was further harmed by Osbourne’s continual touring with the band, which kept him away from home. Aside from Thelma’s older son, Elliot, whom Osbourne adopted, they have two children together. Louis John Osbourne was born in 1975 and Jessica Starshine Osbourne was born on January 20, 1972. Later, the children came out to declare that he was a bad father. Osbourne acknowledged that marrying Thelma was a “bad mistake” and that he had put her through “hell.”
Ozzy Osbourne had affairs with a number of women, including multiple groupies and Sharon, who was also his manager at the time. In 1982, they finally divorced.
