Hantz initially attempted to participate in the CBS reality TV program Pirate Master, but he was rejected. He received an offer to take part in the 19th season of the TV reality series Survivor: Samoa in 2009, two years after being selected for the Pirate Master Cast. He did not squander this fantastic opportunity because it was for him. He typically gravitated toward the part of the story that had the most twists and turns and action. In the Foa tribe, he was given a position of authority.

He rapidly formed a strong belief that called for him to play his part by deceiving others and manipulating their psyche in order to take control of them.
