The Shooting Occurrence
Mary carelessly answered the door on May 19, 1992, unaware that this would affect her life forever. Amy Fisher, her then-17-year-old husband’s mistress, shot her in the face as she stood on her porch.
Fisher never threatened her or showed her the pistol until she shot her. At first, she assumed she was there to discuss Joey, her husband, and Amy Fisher’s alleged affair. After a brief talk, Fisher fired a round that traveled through her face and neck, leaving her in a pool of blood, as she turned back to enter her house.
Amy shot with a 25-caliber handgun. She shot her in the face at close range. They rushed her to the hospital, where she lapsed into a coma for three days. The incident paralyzed one side of her face. The terrible shooting thrust the Buttafuoco family into the public eye.
The Examination
Mary was with Joey at the start of the investigation. He refuted all charges of having a relationship with Fisher at the time. He was later found guilty on multiple counts, and he admitted to having a sexual relationship with Amy Fisher.
When Joey began dating Amy Fisher, she was still a minor. Joey was also convicted of raping a minor and arranging a murder after convincing Amy Fisher to commit the crime.
Joey was sentenced to four months in prison after being charged with statutory rape, sodomy, and endangering the welfare of a child on multiple counts. Amy Fisher was found guilty of attempted murder and sentenced to seven years in prison.
She was confined in the juvenile room until she turned 18 because she was a minor. Fisher was freed on parole in 1999 after serving seven more years in prison on the condition that she never contact the Buttafuoco family again.
The story quickly became international news in Media Overnight. Throughout 1992, tabloids were flooded with rumors about Amy Fisher’s affair with her husband Joey, who was then a teenager. The horrible incident became the most talked-about crime that year and has yet to be fully forgotten.
The crime became so well-known that Fisher’s story was adapted into three television movies. Amy Fisher was also dubbed “The Long Island Lolita” by the media.
Mary, Joey, and Amy, the three members of the deadly love triangle, met for an interview in 2007. She even claimed to have forgiven Fisher. Unfortunately, Amy Fisher appeared unfazed and made nasty accusations about having no sympathy for her.
In 2004, she was featured on ‘The Oprah Winfrey Show. It was to talk about the incident’s aftermath and her facial reconstruction surgery.
She has been on numerous television shows, including The Oprah Winfrey Show, The Howard Stern Show, The Megan Kelly Show, The Dr. Oz Show, ABC 20/20, Inside Edition, The View, Access Hollywood, and others.
She did it to raise awareness about this and other issues such as mental health and addiction/recovery, and she has appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show.
She has also appeared on the Dr. Oz Show, ABC 20/20, The Megan Kelly Show, The View, Inside Edition, Access Hollywood, The Howard Stern Show, and numerous more programs to raise awareness.
The Survival Journey
Mary suffered hearing loss in one of her ears and had one side of her face paralyzed as a result of the sad incident. For the next 25 years, she was unable to grin.
Despite miraculously surviving the close-range shot, she battled for years with her damaged visage. Her earlier procedures were too risky. She was entirely dependent on opioids for years following the initial surgery, which turned her into an addict.
She was recovering when she was transferred to the Betty Ford Center, where she received the majority of her procedures. She recovered partially after many years and was free of discomfort and blood clots.
She was still scarred and paralyzed, however. Dr. Babak Azizzadeh, a plastic surgeon, watched her on the Oprah show and promised to repair her facial paralysis, but the glimmer of hope came with many hurdles.
Dr. Azizzadeh’s biggest issue was contouring while keeping her face symmetry. He began by giving her a facelift and an eyelift, as well as mending some of the nerves that had hindered her from smiling.
Then he concentrated on the procedure that would widen the ear canal, improving her hearing and preventing future infections. ‘Inside Edition,’ a magazine, documented the surgery. She also had physical therapy to help strengthen her facial muscles.

The couple had two children at the time. Jessica Buttafuoco is the daughter, while Paul Buttafuoco is the son. Jessica, her daughter, was just 9 years old at the time of the shooting.
