Keely Nicole Hodgkinson, also known as Keely Hodgkinson, is an English athlete who excels in the 800 meters. She rose to fame by breaking Kelly Holmes’ 1995 British record at the Tokyo Olympics, breaking it at the age of 19.
The youngest woman to ever win the European indoor 800m championship, she was the Diamond League champion. Professional Career
When Keely Hodgkinson joined Leigh Harriers at age nine, she began her athletic career. She participated in the British Schools Modern Biathlon Championships when she was ten years old and finished second in the 500 meters with a personal best time of 1:34.28. She came in seventh place overall as well. She created history by becoming the first Leigh Harriers girl to win the individual under-11 title in both the South East Lancashire League and the Red Rose League after winning a one-mile cross-country event. She won the 800 and 1200-meter titles for Greater Manchester as a U13 in her debut year of competition. She also captured her third Greater Manchester title on a 2.75 km cross-country circuit. She then successfully defended both of her track championships.
At the England Championships and the ESAA English Schools’ Championships, she finished third in the 800m under-15 categories at the age of 14. She participated in the U17 800m events and came in fourth place at the 2017 ESAA Championships. At the England Championships, she won her first gold medal and had a personal best time of 2:06.85. She finished the 800 meters in 2:04.41 to win the under-20 England title in June 2018. Additionally, she won the gold medal at the Gyor European U18 Championships. Keely added titles by setting a competition record time of 2:04.89 in August at the UK School Games. When she placed second for England’s under-20s and won bronze at the U20 Europeans in Boras, Sweden, she set a new personal best time of 2:03.40. She also won the Vienna Indoor Track & Field event on February 1, 2020, with a performance that established a new European U20 800m indoor record of 2:01.16. Later, she triumphed in the British Indoor Championships, winning her first national title. She won two BMC gold standard races in Trafford with an outdoor personal best time of 2:02.85, losing only to Raevyn Rogers, the 2019 global silver winner. When she started the 2021 season, she broke the British women’s under-20 world record for the first time in 36 years. She was the youngest British contender and won the European Athletics Indoor Championships as well.
She won her first important international outdoor race at the Golden Spike in Ostrava in May 2021 and posted her first outdoor sub-2 minute mile in 1:58.89. She ran a time of 1:58.16 to place second in Brussels, a time of 1:58.30 to place fifth at the Prefontaine Classic in the United States, and a time of 1:57.98 to win the Cliff Temple Award for British Female Athlete of the Year from the British Athletics Writers’ Association in Zurich to round out the season. Furthermore, she didn’t receive support from UK Athletics until at least the Tokyo Summer Olympics in 2021, and it was made public in October of that same year that she had secured funds for the Olympic podium program. On February 19, she competed in the 800 meters and easily won in 1:57.20 to set a new British record. This was the start of her indoor season.
She was a lock to win the gold medal going into the World Indoor Championships Belgrade 22 in March 2022. She won her specialty tournament, the Eugene Diamond League, the Oslo Diamond League, and the Stockholm Diamond League before launching her summer season on May 21 in the Birmingham Diamond League. She competed against Mary Moraa in Stockholm. At the World Championships in Eugene, Oregon, where she also won the silver medal, Keely came in second to Mu (1:56.30). In a personal best time of 1:56.71, Moraa came in third.
