Payne was born to Tony Payne and Leshawn Payne on August 8, 1994. He spent his formative years in Bartlett, Tennessee, alongside his older brother Tony Jr. Payne. Additionally, he was born under the Leo astrological sign.

College

Payne was chosen by Oklahoma City Thunder with the 14th overall pick in the 2015 NBA Draft on June 25. Payne injured his ring finger before joining the NBA, but it wasn’t a serious enough injury to require surgery.
After that, his rookie contract didn’t arrive until July 10; yet, he made his team debut on November 1.
His first appearance was in a game against the Denver Nuggets, where he contributed three assists in just four minutes, leading to a 117-93 victory.
