Professional Career, (actress)

While performing in the play George Washington Slept Here, produced by Rance Howard, the father of director Ron Howard, Bredemus met her husband Walter Grady Roberts (1933–1977). Roberts, Bredemus, Howard, and his wife Jean grew good friends and decided to tour to a few USO bases to perform plays. After being married in 1955, Bredemus and Roberts welcomed their first child, actor Eric Roberts, in April 1956.

After serving in the military, Walter decided to become a playwright, and he relocated his family to Louisiana so he could enroll at Tulane University. The family resided in family housing on the campus. Just before graduation, Walter dropped out of school, and in 1960 he relocated his family to Decatur, Georgia. While Walter worked in a variety of theatrical roles, Bredemus soon started working in public relations at Emory University.

Bum and His Buddies is a children’s program that Bredemus and Roberts produced in 1965 for the local network. Bredemus portrayed Bum Bum as the clown in the first episode. Creole Capers was a brief-lived television show that Betty and Walter had previously produced. After 15 Buddies episodes, Bredemus and Roberts moved on to start the Atlanta Actors and Writers Workshop, where they now train children from five to 18 years old. Bredemus also gave birth to their daughter Lisa in 1965. The workshop quickly gained popularity among Atlanta’s youth and was a big success.

The children of Martin Luther King Jr. and his wife, Coretta, were enrolled among the kids. Yolanda King, their eldest child, studied acting under Walter. Their child Julia Roberts was born in 1967. The workshop group was upset by Bredemus’ pregnancy since she had to briefly stop carrying out the numerous activities required to put on a show. Betty and Walter were having financial problems when Julia was born, so Coretta Scott King offered to cover the hospital fee. At the time of their father’s murder, the King’s children were enrolled in classes at the workshop.

Eventually, the workshop was shut down, and Roberts and Bredemus got divorced in 1972. In 1976, she gave birth to their daughter Nancy after getting married to Michael Motes. Motes was violent and frequently out of work. Bredemus divorced Motes in 1983, alleging his violence and claiming that she had made a grave error in marriage. She resumed using Bredemus, her maiden name.
