Rod Demery’s Mother Was Murdered
Rod’s mother, Barbara Sue Demery, was murdered on May 8, 1969, when he was three and his brother was five years old. His mother was murdered by her new husband, Jerry Armstead, who was approximately eighteen years her senior.
Jerry was charged with “murder without malice” after shooting her nine times in the back. A proper investigation had never taken place because Jerry was friends with the local sheriff.
Rod later became a detective and investigated his mother’s murder. He tracked down Jerry and discovered that he was in poor health, and when he interviewed him, he repeated the same lie about what had happened for so long. Rod simply forgave the man and realized that forgiveness was the key to unlocking all doors.

Patrick Demery, Rod’s brother, murdered his friend Richard Sherman and attempted to murder Sherman’s girlfriend and daughter after the three adults got high on cocaine together early on April 6, 1994.
Patrick reported that Richard had stolen $50 from him and stabbed his friend ten or eleven times after the murder. Patrick was sentenced to 22 years in a California state prison, followed by two consecutive life sentences.
