Rick Mitchell is the chief meteorologist for NBC 5, beginning at 4 a.m. and ending at 10 p.m. He has extensive experience covering the weather in Oklahoma. He’s been in the field, performing his duties even in the most ferocious tornadoes.
Rick covered the most intense one, which occurred on May 3, 1999. It was, however, the very thing that got him into the weather.
He got to witness a blizzard when he was about ten years old, never knowing it would be a defining storm of his career.
Rick Mitchell: Professional Life and Career
Rick, who stands at an unknown height, graduated from the University of Nebraska with a Bachelor of Science in Meteorology and worked for nearly 18 years at KOCO-TV in Oklahoma City before joining NBC 5.
The former chief meteorologist for KOCO-TV also forecasted for WOI-TV in Des Moines, Iowa.
Meanwhile, the American Meteorological Society’s CBM Seal recipient joined NBC 5 in August 2012.
Some of the most memorable accolades he received for his severe weather forecasting years came from the Oklahoma Association of Broadcasters and the Associated Press, not to mention Oklahoma Governor Frank Keating.
Overall, Rick’s long journeys must have paid off handsomely in terms of fame and, more importantly, a generous salary.

Rick and his now-wife went on their first date 37 years ago on a beautiful day in April.
In May 2019, the then-young lovebirds celebrated their 32nd wedding anniversary. They grew more in love with each passing day, despite experiencing their fair share of highs and lows.
Rick’s wife was diagnosed with breast cancer in the year 2014. She was fortunate, however, that her treatment procedure went smoothly. She was cancer-free in March 2015 after two surgeries, five months of chemotherapy, and thirty-three radiation treatments.
Today, the courageous cancer survivor inspires many women with her inspirational stories. She appears to have been involved in a cancer awareness campaign. Her husband is particularly proud of her role.
More important to the family are their lovely children. Rick frequently posts glimpses of them on social media.
He is the proud father of two children: Shane Steinkraus, a son, and Zoe, a beautiful daughter who recently completed her mainstream education with a master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology.
