Cole eventually began his media career as a CBS journalist. During his time at CBS, he covered important events such as the 1998 US presidential campaign of Democratic Party nominee Michael Dukakis, earning numerous accolades for his work.

Michael made a significant contribution to his professional life prior to CBS by reporting on the Yugoslav Civil War for nine months. In addition, he was chosen to cover the aftermath of the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing.
