She was raised as the adopted daughter of Sunderland pharmacist Wilfred and his wife Maud. Kate was given up by her birth parents to a new family in order to avoid societal pressures.

In 1980, Kate got a big break when she covered the siege of the Iranian Embassy in London. She also provided live coverage of the World Snooker Championships.
