Her family has always supported her desire to become a professional tennis player. Before turning professional in 2000, she topped the International Tennis Federation (ITF) junior rankings. 1994–2003 Kaia’s trainer was Tiit Kivistik. Kaia’s coach from 2003 to the fall of 2007 was Andrei Luzgin. She was coached by Fredrik Lovén of Sweden after Luzgin, but their relationship ended in February 2008. Kanepi’s subsequent coach was Pablo Giacopelli (until September 2008).
Since November 2008, she has been coached by Luca Appino. After November 2009, Kanepi was coached by fellow Estonian player Mait Künnap.
