Hugh Quarshie: Family and Age

Hugh Quarshie was born on December 22, 1954, in Accra, Ghana. His father, Richard Quarshie, was descended from African chiefs, while his mother had English and Dutch ancestors.

Hugh knew very little about his mother’s family. So he went to see his uncle, Jimmy Philips, to learn more about the family. From there, he embarked on a journey to discover many secrets about his forefathers.

He later discovered that his grandfather, William Reginald Phillips, was a white man whose mother, Anna Kamerling, was a mixed-race woman of African and Dutch ancestry.

He learned that his grandfather was a wealthy businessman and a partner in the firm EB Ephson and co. Hugh dug deeper into his maternal family’s history and discovered how his relative dominated the former British colony of the Gold Coast as a member of the ‘Mulatto elite.’

The most significant discovery, however, was a ‘Kamerling House,’ which led him into the depths of his ancestry linked to his great grandmother, Anna. On his final journey, he discovered another long-lost cousin, Eric Kamerling, the keeper of the family archive.

The journey took him to many places and helped him discover relatives he had no idea existed.
