On September 19, 1966, Soledad was born as Mara de la Soledad Teresa O’Brien. Edward Ephrem O’Brien, a professor of mechanical engineering at SUNY Stony Brook, and Estela O’Brien, a French and English teacher at Smithtown High School West, are her parents.
Her father was from Australia, and her mother was from Cuba, therefore both of her parents were immigrants. Soledad began her journalism career in 1991 at the NBC-affiliated WBZ-TV. She hosted news shows like Weekend Today and Today Show throughout her stay at NBC. She left NBC in 2003 to join CNN as co-anchor of the morning news program American Morning, where she remained until 2007. She worked as a correspondent for MSNBC.
