Personality

Enmu has a sadistic personality and enjoys inflicting pain and suffering on humans, with his favorite method of tormenting them being to give them a happy and pleasant dream before turning it into a nightmare. He enjoys inflicting pain on others and watching their agonized expressions as he tortures them. Sadism extends to his fellow Demons, as he delights in watching his fellow Lower Ranks be slaughtered right in front of his eyes.

Enmu, like most Demons, is shown to have little regard for human life, viewing humans as nothing more than pawns, as he fails to warn his human minions of the dangers of dealing with Demon Slayers, deeming them expendable. He also appears to take pleasure in turning people into his desperate servants by using his power to give them nice and pleasant dreams, then dragging them out and falsely promising them more if they help him.

Enmu has also demonstrated intelligence and caution, fully comprehending his power’s strengths and weaknesses and ensuring that he exploits and avoids them in order to succeed. Enmu appears to have become overconfident, arrogant, and greedy after being given more blood and thus further empowered by Muzan, as evidenced by his reckless behavior in obtaining more blood from Muzan in order to properly challenge one of the Upper Ranks to a blood duel in order to take their place.

Enmu: Appearance

Enmu appears as a pale young man with ringed blue eyes that tilt sharply down to the sides of his face, the left with the kanji for “Lower Rank One” etched into its iris and a horizontal slat on his right instead of a pupil. He has three square-shaped markings on each cheek, each separated by a smaller square, that fade from green to yellow in color, and chin-length dark black hair parted to the right, with the right side slicked back behind his ear.

His hair fades to a reddish-orange color near the ends, but the tips of two longer, shoulder-length strands that curve upwards and outwards from beneath the rest of his hair appear blue.

Enmu is dressed in a long, black button-up coat with two tails in front and behind that fall just below his knees, and a white dress shirt with cuffs that overlap his coat’s. He’s also dressed in a pair of pinstriped pale gray pants and plain gray shoes.

Enmu’s left hand forms a mouth in the back, an eye next to it, and most of his fingers have the kanji for Dream etched on their skin after receiving more blood from Muzan Kibutsuji.

History

When Enmu was a human, he had a tendency to be unable to distinguish between dreams and reality since childhood, which caused many problems for those around him. He used hypnotic therapies and convinced patients who didn’t have long to live that they had recovered their health as an adult, despite the fact that he wasn’t a doctor. Despite the fact that they eventually realized it was all a lie, he continued to perpetuate this heinous fraud.

Muzan decided one night that he wanted to eat Enmu whole. Muzan ate Enmu’s guts, and he wasn’t supposed to turn into a demon at first, but he envied and praised Muzan because he felt no pain from the fatal wound.

His heart and brain stopped working as a result of those last words, and Muzan transformed him into a demon. Enmu was well aware that he had been converted on Muzan’s whim and that he would only remember him in passing, so he worked hard to rise to the rank of Lower Moon One.

Arc of Rehabilitation Training Synopsis

Muzan appears before them in his female form after the remaining Lower Ranks assemble at the Infinity Castle. He frowns at them and tells them to squat in front of him and lower their heads.

After they’ve all done so, Mukago apologizes for being forced to bow because she doesn’t recognize Muzan in his current form. Muzan becomes enraged and tells her to stop speaking without permission and to keep quiet unless she is directly asked a question.

Muzan goes on to explain the death of Rui, the only Lower Rank who wasn’t among those gathered before him, and asks the remaining demons why they’re so weak as she cowers in fear at her feet.

Wakuraba then considers that he, too, will be killed, so he must do more to maintain his Lower Rank status, while Mukago considers how she flees at the mere mention of a Hashira. Muzan reads both of their thoughts aloud, and a terrified Mukago exclaims that what she thought was false and that she would fight for him with her life on the line.

Muzan asks if she denies what he’s saying, and just as Mukago starts to apologize and cry, Muzan’s tentacles crush her into the ground, killing her.

Muzan gives them a lecture about how being a member of the Twelve Kizuki is only the beginning of what is to come. Their sole purpose, he claims, is to consume blood so that they can be useful to him.

Muzan retorts angrily that the Upper Ranks haven’t been replaced in over a century, but the Lower Ranks are replaced all the time, and Kamanue thinks to himself that he can’t just tell them that.

Muzan, who has the ability to read the minds of those with whom he has shared blood, asks Kamanue angrily why they weren’t told that, expanding and extending his arm into a tentacle to grab the Lower Rank by the neck and lift him into the air.

Enmu and the rest of the Lower Ranks keep their heads lowered in stunned silence as a terrified Kamanue tries to apologize, but is promptly eaten by Muzan.

Wakuraba is taken aback by this and immediately assumes the worst, deciding that if he wants to save his life, he should flee rather than stay. Enmu thinks to himself, with a sadistic smile on his face, that dashing out of the Infinity Castle at a high speed was a stupid move because Muzan will kill him either way. This conclusion proves to be correct, as Wakuraba’s head is chopped off so quickly that he is left wondering how he even died in his final moments.

Rokuro panics as one of the two Lower Ranks still alive, exclaiming that if he just lives a little longer, he can definitely still be useful to Muzan. Rokuro explains that if he had more of Muzan’s blood, he could adapt and definitely become a strong fighter worthy of his leader.

Muzan asks how he would be useful, how long the deferment would last, and how much power he could wield as he was, and Rokuro explains that if he had more of Muzan’s blood, he could adapt and definitely become a strong fighter worthy of his leader.

Muzan angrily tosses Wakuraba’s head down next to Enmu and Rokuro, questioning Lower Rank 2 about why he should be given more blood and insisting that he knows where he stands. Rokuro tries to protest, but Muzan silences him and tells him that he deserved to die because he tried to instruct his leader. Muzan moves on to the last Lower Rank left, Enmu, after killing Rokuro.

Enmu expresses joy at Muzan killing him personally as well as the suffering of humans and his fellow Ranks when asked for his final words, thanking his leader for saving him until last.

Muzan then reconsiders his decision after a brief glance at Enmu. Enmu is then stabbed in the neck with a needle-like appendage and given a generous amount of Muzan’s blood, with Muzan telling him to help him by killing Hashira of the Demon Slayer Corps.

Muzan promises Enmu even more blood if he kills the demon slayer with Hanafuda earrings, Tanjiro Kamado. Enmu is then escorted onto a street from his hideout. Enmu is then shown a vision of Tanjiro, his intended victim, which piques his interest in more Muzan blood.

Powers & Abilities

As Lower Rank 1, Enmu is the most powerful Lower Rank and comes the closest to matching the Upper Ranks’ strength. His power and abilities were enhanced even more after receiving more blood from Muzan.

He is, however, nowhere near the level of an Upper-Rank Demon, as evidenced by his defeats by Tanjiro and Inosuke, and thus pales in comparison to the likes of Daki, Gyutaro, and Kaigaku, the least among the Upper Rank.

Physical Power

Enhanced Speed & Reflexes: Enmu has an extremely high concentration of Muzan Kibutsuji’s blood in him as the strongest member of the Twelve Kizuki, which enhances and augments his movement speed as well as his physical and mental reaction time and reflexes. This is demonstrated in the movie adaptation during his battle with Tanjiro Kamado, where he was able to dodge and react to every single one of Tanjiro’s attacks with little effort, even moving so quickly that he struggled to keep up.

Flesh Manipulation: Enmu, like all Demons, is capable of manipulating his own flesh. Enmu uses this ability after fusing with the train to try to consume the human passengers and attack the Demon Slayers on board.

Art of the Blood Demon:

Dream Manipulation: Enmu’s primary ability is the ability to enter, manipulate, and control other people’s dreams. He can even kill someone in a dream by destroying their “Spiritual Core,” effectively destroying their mind and leaving their body as an empty shell.

However, as seen when one of Enmu’s human agents is touched by Tanjiro’s inner kindness and loses his will to kill him, there’s a risk of being affected and possibly mentally changed by his victim’s unconscious mind. As a result, rather than entering his victims’ minds himself, Enmu always sends someone else to do so.

Connecting Rope: Enmu can make a special rope out of his own flesh that, when tied to a sleeper trapped inside one of his dreams and an outsider, allows the outsider access to that person’s dreams. To enter the victim’s dreams, the outsider must first tie both ends of the rope to themselves, then count backwards until they fall asleep.

Weapon

Awl: Enmu can make an awl with one of his bones as the handle and a sharp point made from one of his teeth. Once found within the subconscious realm of a person’s dream, Enmu’s awls are capable of piercing and destroying the spiritual core. They are more powerful than a regular tool because they pierced Tanjiro’s Demon Slayer Corps uniform, despite the uniform’s resistance to minor demon claws and fangs.

Quotes

“I must say, I like to show a nightmare after I show someone a good dream. I love to see the contortions of a human face! To gaze upon someone struggling with their grief and suffering—so much fun!
