David Gower: Age and Childhood

Gower was born in Tunbridge Wells on April 1, 1957. His father, Richard Gower OBE, was a Colonial Service officer in Dar es Salaam, the capital of the then-British-ruled Tanganyika Territory, where Gower grew up. When Tanganyika won independence, Gower’s family moved to England when he was six years old, landing in Kent and subsequently relocating to Loughborough. Gower attended Marlborough House School in Hawkhurst from the age of eight to thirteen, where he excelled in cricket.

He was a scholarship student at The King’s School in Canterbury. He took the Oxford University History test and was invited to an interview at Saint Edmund Hall, but he was not admitted. Gower returned to school after declining a position at University College London in order to complete two more A levels, but dropped out halfway through the year.

Career

Gower had one of the most productive first-class cricket careers in English history, both at home and abroad. He played domestic cricket with Leicestershire from 1975 to 1993, before moving to Hampshire in 1989.

He batted regularly for both organizations. Gower led England to win in the 1985 Ashes, but two 5-0 whitewashes against the West Indies (in 1984 and 1985-86) reflected poorly on his leadership, and he was dismissed in 1986. He was temporarily reinstated for the 1989 Ashes series before being sacked as captain by Graham Gooch.

Gower’s rocky friendship had a role in his withdrawal from international cricket in 1993. Despite this, he concluded his first-class career with 26,339 runs at an average of 40.08 and 53 centuries. He holds the Test cricket record of 119 consecutive innings without a duck as of February 2021.

After retiring, Gower became a renowned Sky Sports cricket analyst, and he was inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame on July 16, 2009. In commemoration of England’s 1000th Test in August 2018, the ECB named him to the country’s best Test XI.
