Cynthia Scurtis, 46, was born in Miami, Florida to one of the city’s most prominent religious families in the posh Coconut Grove neighborhood.
Her grandfather, Demosthenes Mekras, was an influential Greek and priest who founded the first Greek Orthodox church in Miami, so she grew up in a religious family.
Cynthia studied psychology at Ohio State University and was a member of the Pi Beta Phi sorority. She graduated with honors from Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale with a master’s degree in psychology.
Her father, John, an importer-exporter, and mother, Evangeline, encouraged her athletic side from an early age, in addition to her excellent grades. Cynthia stands 5 feet 6 inches tall and was an avid volleyball player in high school (1.68 meters).

Six years after their first meeting, Alex proposed to Cynthia over dinner at a South Beach restaurant on December 28, 2002, as Cynthia blew out her 30th birthday candle.
