Courtney was born to her parents on May 4, 1977, in Westport, Connecticut, USA. She grew up with her parents and older brother, Herb Kemp, and is extremely close to them. Courtney was devastated and heartbroken when her beloved father Herbert Kemp Jr. died in 2011.

Courtney dedicated the series’ first episode, ‘Power,’ to her late father. She told a story about her late father in an interview with Yahoo.com.

Her father, a dashing man standing 6 feet 3 inches (1.90 meters) tall, was born into a poor family and had no money. Her father and his sister used to perform street dances for money.

Courtney’s father later relocated to North to work for General Motors and became the first black man to graduate from Dartmouth’s Tuck School of Business.

Eventually, her father advanced in his career, providing every convenience for his children that he did not receive.

Returning to Courtney, she is of American nationality and of African-American ethnicity.
