Isaiah Stannard, a transgender child actress, has appeared in films such as Brad’s Status and Good Girls. His name in the TV series is Sadie Marks, and he played the daughter of Mae Whitman’s character Annie.
The character, Sadie Marks
Sadie’s character recently revealed the truth about his gender identity on NBC’s Good Girls. While Sadie is a female character in the show, Isaiah Stannard identifies as a man.
The big reveal is made by Sadie Marks, Annie’s 11-year-old daughter (played by Mae Whitman) in the episode that aired on April 21, 2019. Annie informs Sadie that her stepmother is expecting a baby boy.
How was the transgender storyline created for Good Girls?
When Isaiah was chosen to play the role of a boy named Ben, who was supposed to be Annie’s son in the film, she was a young girl.
However, Isaiah had transgendered and began using male pronouns before the filming began. As a result, Jenna Bans, the author of “Good Girls,” wanted to include this experience in the plot.
Variety commented on the storyline in June, saying:
“‘Good Girls’ creator Jenna Bans had an eye-opening experience when casting her NBC dramedy. She had originally written Sadie, the teenage daughter of Mae Whitman’s Annie, as a boy named Ben.
When her casting director asked if she’d be interested in seeing a girl for the part of a boy, she was intrigued and hired Izzy Stannard — a young actor who, at the time, seemed to identify with the female gender assigned to him at birth. By the time filming began, Stannard made it clear that he identified as a boy and was using he/him pronouns.’”
Here’s what Jenna had to say:
“We realized we had a really great opportunity to tell a story about a character who was gender non-conforming, but at the same time not necessarily have that be what leads the story. What’s most important to the character and the story we’re telling between Sadie and Annie is really about the bond between Sadie and her mom. We liked the idea that the character of Sadie was exploring her gender [expression] in the show, but I think what we responded to more was that the Mae Whitman character just couldn’t care less.”
