Duff was born in Columbus, Ohio, on March 11, 1972. The 49-year-old was born and raised in Tustin, California, and began his football career while still in high school. He transferred to Foothill High School and continued his athletic career.
He went to Lancaster to live with his father during his sophomore year. He then transferred to Antelope Valley College, where he played Varsity football for a year. For his junior year, he returned to Foothill Campus, where he continued to play football.

After suffering a foot injury during the 1996 season, he took a vacation from football. He returned to the Washington Redskins as a member of the team. Over the course of two seasons (1997–98), he appeared in 26 games and recorded five sacks.
