Hales first drew national attention as a sixteen-year-old in 2005, when he hit 55 off a single over (three no-balls, eight sixes, one four) in a Cricket Idol T20 competition at Lords. Ironically, he had been chosen for his quick bowling talents.
In the summer of 2008, Hales represented England U19s in a series of junior Test matches and ODIs against a visiting New Zealand U19s, averaging 50 in the Tests and over 30 in the ODIs, including three half-centuries.
Hales scored 28 against the West Indies in England’s opening game before hitting 17 against South Africa in a historic run chase. After missing the third game against Afghanistan owing to injury, Hales returned for the crucial game against Sri Lanka, which England won despite being out for a duck.
