Professional Career
While debating his professional path, Aldon Smith was named the Big 12 Defensive Freshman of the Year and a first-team freshman All-American. After the season, he indicated that he will skip his final two years of eligibility and enter the NFL Draft in 2011. Mock draft projections have him in the mid-late first round of the 2011 NFL Draft. Smith was taken seventh overall by the San Francisco 49ers in the first round of the NFL Draft.
He became the first 49ers player since linebacker Patrick Willis in 2007 to earn NFL Rookie of the Month. He led the 49ers to a 6-1 record with 13 tackles and 6.5 sacks, including one that caused a safety. Smith got 2.5 sacks in Week 15 against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
