Gus Johnson (full name: Augustus Cornelius Johnson Jr.) is a sportscaster in the United States. He currently does play-by-play for Fox Sports. Gus is most well-known as Fox Sports’ lead announcer for college football and basketball.
He is also known for his animated playcalling. Gus worked as a play-by-play announcer for the Minnesota Timberwolves in the NBA from 1996 to 1997. He also called Big East Basketball on the Big East Network, as well as college hockey and basketball on ESPN.
Gus also called the Canadian Football League games for ESPN2. He worked for CBS from 1998 to 2010. In 1991, Gus was the host of ESPN’s Black College Sports Today. In addition, from 1991 to 1992, he was the weekend anchor for WTTG-TV in Washington, D.C.
This followed brief stints as an on-air personality with Waco, Texas-based KXXV-TV, Huntsville, Alabama-based WAAY-TV, and Winston-Salem, North Carolina-based WXII-TV. Gus also appeared as an announcer in the 1998 film He Got Game.
