Pip was born Philip Dean Torrens in Bromley, Kent on 2nd June 1960.
He attended Bloxham High School in Oxfordshire before enrolling at Trinity College, Cambridge, to study English Literature. Following graduation, he spent a year studying at the Drama Studio London.
He grew up in a family with two brothers. Chris Torrens, one of his brothers, is a risk analyst, while Jon Torrens is a communication skills coach.

However, he made his big-screen breakthrough with the comedy-drama picture Oxford Blues (1984). He made his debut television appearance shortly thereafter from Hold the Back Page (1986).
