Palestinian poet, author, and political activist Mahmoud Darwish were well-known worldwide. He is regarded as one of the most significant Arab poets of the 20th century and is best known for his writing on the subjects of resistance, exile, and identity.
Early Life
On March 13, 1941, Darwish was born in the Palestinian village of al-Birwa. He was born in 1948, the year after Israel and the Arab world fought a war that resulted in the conquest of Palestine, and grew up in a time of great political turmoil. Darwish spent most of his adolescence in refugee camps in Lebanon and Syria when his family was forced to flee their home and become refugees.
Education & Employment
Prior to enrolling at American University in Beirut, Darwish received his education in a refugee camp in Lebanon. His first collection of poetry, “Asafir bila ajniha” (Birds Without Wings), was published in 1964. He started writing poems at a young age. Over his career, Darwish published volumes of poetry as well as plays, essays, and memoirs. He served as an editor for several literary publications and was a founding member of the Palestinian Writers’ Guild.
