Olmec, the gigantic talking Mayan head, appears to be returning to the small screen.
After more than 20 years, The CW has commissioned a resurrection of Nickelodeon’s famous 1990s games show Legends of the Hidden Temple. The original series ran from 1993 to 1995 and was based on Nintendo’s “The Legend of Zelda” video game and the Indiana Jones film franchise.
Adult participants will compete in the latest iteration, which will take place outside of a studio setting in a “mystery jungle” with hard obstacles and “far higher awards.” Every episode will feature five teams competing to be the first to access the prohibited Olmec’s Temple. They must rescue the misplaced treasure and return it to its proper location while avoiding the Temple Guards’ nefarious activities.
However, several aspects from the original game will return in the newer version, including “Moat Crossings, The Steps of Knowledge, and the Temple Run.” The team’s names will also remain the same: “Purple Parrots, Blue Barracudas, Orange Iguanas, Red Jaguars, Silver Snakes, and Green Monkeys.”
The series was planned to premiere in April 2020 on the now-defunct streaming platform Quibi, but it never materialized. As a result, the CW decided to relaunch it in order to broaden its programming and target audience.
Legends of the Hidden Temple: Details
Cristela Alonzo, who starred in the 2014 ABC series Cristela, will host the game show, which will premiere on The CW on October 10. Alonzo made television history as the first Latina to create, produce, write, and star in her own American prime-time comedy with the series.
Alonzo has worked on a variety of projects since then, including guest hosting ABC’s iconic chat show The View. Alonzo is eager to be a part of the comeback because he grew up with ’90s pop culture.
The only tough aspect of her new job, according to the writer, producer, actress, and comedian, is hosting while trying to suppress her enthusiasm. She will take over for original presenter Kirk Fogg, who was well-liked by viewers for his ability to steer the show.
After more than two decades, Dee Bradley Baker will reprise his role as the famed talking Mayan giant. Baker’s Olmec is the show’s most recognizable icon. When they approached Baker again to voice Olmec, he was more than eager, according to executive producer Scott Stone.
Stone & Company Entertainment and Nickelodeon are collaborating on Legends of the Hidden Temple.
