Based on author Suzanne Collins’ sci-fi novel of the same name, all four parts of The Hunger Games became box office smashes.
Among the many celebrities in the cast were Elizabeth Banks, Jennifer Lawrence, Chris Hemsworth, and Josh Hutcherson.
The series is set in the dystopian society of Panem, and while there are some heartwarming moments, the nation is desolate and vicious.
Unfortunately, tyrannical rulers force a group of teenagers to fight for their lives until Katniss Everdeen, played by Lawrence, arrives and saves Panem.
Many viewers thought Lawrence’s Everdeen was the star of the film, but Banks’ Effie Trinket quietly stole the show.
The eccentric yet endearing escort and public relations handler from The Hunger Games brought some much-needed levity to the dark films.
Banks’ character is always dressed in avant-garde fashion, with bright hair and makeup.
The actress revealed that the wardrobe was both exciting and painful.
Elizabeth Banks Was Unable to Work on the ‘Hunger Games’ Set
Banks told Collider that choosing the looks for her character was a lot of fun.
She explained that she collaborated on The Hunger Games with an old friend, Judianna Makovsky.
Makovsky invited Bank to her studio, which also featured a “weird” dress form of Banks and reference boards all around the room.
“It was fantastic. “We looked at Kabuki, Christian Dior, Marie Antoinette, all these crazy adornments, and just really crazy, cool stuff,” the actress explained.
Effie’s costumes were all handcrafted.
But, as much as Banks enjoyed donning the outrageous outfits, she admitted that one aspect hampered her — her nails.
Effie was always seen with long, elegant, and slightly garish manicures. She claimed she couldn’t function because of her nails and relied on assistants to do everything for her.
Her assistant would answer the phone for her and even assist her in the restroom. The Pitch Perfect star revealed that getting into and out of her costume took her 25 minutes.
She was the only one eating at lunch because everyone else had finished by the time she sat down.
And because she had spent all of her lunchtime removing the costume, she had to eat quickly because she only had ten minutes.
Lil Nas X Remembers Effie Trinket
Fortunately, the elaborate costumes and Banks’ sacrifice won many hearts and a large fan base.
Lil Nas X is one such fan. In the music video for ‘Montero (Call Me by Your Name),’ the rapper appears to channel an Effie-infused pizazz.
The ‘Old Town’ rapper wore a look similar to one of his looks in the controversial video.
While the LGBTQ community applauded the rapper for celebrating his queerness, others chastised him for using religious imagery.
In the video, the rapper enters the Garden of Eden before pole-dancing down a stripper pole into hell and performing a lap dance for the devil.
Despite the social media backlash, Banks shared a photo of Lil Nas X’s Effie-inspired look and congratulated him, writing, “you do you.”
