Cheryl Hines is a unique individual!
In January 2022, actress Cheryl Hines demonstrated this by opposing her husband, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., following his insensitive political commentary earlier that month.
Even though she has been married to Kennedy Jr. for nearly a decade, she is not afraid to express her views regardless of what her husband says in public.
Cheryl Hines Disputed Her Husband’s Remarks
On January 23, 2022, at a rally against vaccine mandates, Kennedy Jr. expressed his unfiltered thoughts on the subject. He said several things in opposition to vaccine policies in the United States.
During his speech, he made a direct comparison between vaccine mandates and Anne Frank and her actions to save her life during WWII.
This sparked widespread outrage on Twitter and in the mainstream media, with many criticizing Kennedy Jr. for his derogatory remarks.
The Auschwitz Memorial was the first to respond, calling his remarks “a sad symptom of moral and intellectual decay.”
Many others, including NBC News senior reporter Ben Collins, added their two cents. He also chastised Kennedy Jr. for comments other than the Anne Frank comparison.
This outrage drew Hines into the debate, and she was forced to state her husband’s views. In doing so, she stated that she disagreed with her husband.
“My husband’s opinions do not reflect my own,” she said in her tweet. “We love each other, but we disagree on many current issues.”
Another user, who addressed her directly in his tweet, asked her to agree that the horrors of the Holocaust should not be compared to anything else. He also asked her to say that her husband’s comparison was incorrect.
Hines agreed with this Individual as well
Collins, the aforementioned NBC reporter, appeared to have misinterpreted Hines’ tweets. He interpreted her initial statement as a remark on her husband’s words. She clarified that this was not the case.
She later explained to Collins that she was only responding to a question about whether she agreed with her husband on the issue. She did not do so.
Then, on January 25, she issued a final statement to clear the air.
“My husband’s reprehensible and insensitive reference to Anne Frank at a mandate rally in D.C. was reprehensible and insensitive,” she wrote at the beginning of the tweet. She also stated that the Holocaust should not be compared to “anyone or anything.”
My husband’s use of Anne Frank during a mandate rally in D.C. was heinous and insensitive. The atrocities committed by millions of people during the Holocaust should never be compared to anyone or anything else. His views are not representative of mine. Finally, she stated that her husband’s views do not reflect her own.
On the same day, Kennedy Jr. apologized for his insensitive remarks about Anne Frank, as well as for hurting anyone who had suffered the horrors of the Holocaust. He also clarified his intentions, saying he only wanted to use “examples of past barbarism” to “demonstrate the dangers of new control technologies.”
