Career
Ettore Messina’s first job as a coach was at Virtus Bologna (1989–2002). There, he won two EuroLeague titles (1997–98 and 2000–01) and two Italian Cups (1999, 2001, and 2002). In the same way, he joined Benetton Treviso and stayed there for three years, during which time he won three Italian Cups and made it to the EuroLeague final, where he lost.
Messina joined the CSKA Moscow team in 2005. Later, he led the team to victory in the EuroLeague in 2005–06. Under Messina, CSKA won the EuroLeague title for the second time in 2008. In 2008–09, he led CSKA to the Russian Championship and the EuroLeague Final. After that, he left the team.
On June 18, 2009, he was named the new coach of Real Madrid in the Spanish League. Messina quit as head coach of Real Madrid in March 2011 after a string of bad games.
Messina was the head coach of the senior men’s Italian national team from 1993 to 1997. He led Italy to win the EuroBasket championship in 1997. On July 15, 2014, the San Antonio Spurs hired him as an assistant coach.
