Beginning of ZZ Top
Members Billy Gibbons, Lanier Greig, and Dan Mitchell established ZZ Top in 1969. Billy was in charge of lead vocals and guitars, Lanier was the group’s bassist and organist, and Dan was in charge of drums and percussion. They released their debut single, “Salt Lick,” later that year. Lanier and Dan were then replaced by Billy Ethridge and Frank Beard, respectively. Except for Billy Ethridge, all members consented to the contract when they obtained a record deal from London Records.
As a result, he departed the band, and Dusty Hill took his place. “ZZ Top’s First Album,” their debut album, was released in 1971. The next year, they released “Rio Grande Mud,” their second studio album. The album’s lead track, “Francine,” reached number 69 on the Billboard charts. “Tres Hombres,” their third studio album, was released in 1973 and reached number eight on the US Billboard 200.
Evolution of ZZ Top
They released the album “Degüello” in 1979, which won a platinum certification from the RIAA on one hand but only reached the 24th spot on the Billboard 200 charts on the other. They released their seventh studio album, “El Loco,” which was certified Gold a few years later. They published the album “Eliminator” in 1983, which became their biggest commercial success. The album was certified Diamond by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) after selling over 10 million copies in the United States.
On fact, the album is ranked 398th in Rolling Stone Magazine’s list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. The album’s lead hit, “Legs,” won an MTV Video Music Award. They published the album “Afterburner” in 1985, which not only reached #4 on the Billboard charts but also received a 5-Platinum certification from the Recording Industry Association of America. Their album “Recycler,” released in 1990, was also certified platinum.
Four years later, in 1994, they released their 11th studio album, “Antenna,” which reached number 14 on the Billboard 200 lists and was certified Platinum. In 2012, they released “La Futura,” their 15th studio album, which debuted at number 6 on the US Billboard 200.
