Chris McCarthy, Paramount+’s chief content officer of unscripted entertainment and adult animation, stated at the recent ViacomCBS Investors Event that the streaming platform was working on a sequel to the 2011 MTV smash Teen Wolf.
McCarthy went on to unveil the new feature-length sequel’s eleven recurring cast members. However, there were a few notable omissions, the most notable of which was Arden Cho.
Cho was the only woman of color among the four female series regular cast members who played the group of teen pals at the show’s center, according to fans of the original supernatural teen drama.
According to Deadline, in addition to Cho, series regulars Dylan O’Brien and Tyler Hoechlin will not be returning for the Teen Wolf sequel. While Cho and O’Brien were virtually certainly not going to be in the film, Hoechlin’s fate was still up in the air.
There had been rumors that Hoechlin would not be joining the production, but the publication has received confirmation that he might still be there. Cho’s absence has caused greater anxiety among fans, who believe that her refusal to join the show has something to do with the industry’s persistent prejudice.
Arden Cho Was Offered A 50% Salary Deduction
Cho was allegedly offered half the income of the other female regulars, according to a source close to the outlet. Cho reportedly declined to be a part of the Teen Wolf revival due to the compensation disparity. According to the reporting, the wage gap scenario did not arise spontaneously throughout the film.
In fact, she may have been written out of the show’s sixth season, which began in November 2016, because she was exposed to per-episode pay discrimination. Cho made her debut in the third season of the show, and she went on to become a regular. She also got a decent amount of screen time in the following two seasons of the show.
‘Teen Wolf’ Fans React
When the news broke, people immediately took to Twitter to express their displeasure. One fan of the show expressed their delight that Cho would not be appearing in the future film because they disliked her role, to begin with.
They did, however, say that letting her go because of a pay discrepancy was “illegal.” Another fan theorized that some of the cast members’ refusal to participate in the future film was due to their outrage over Cho’s prejudice.
