Warrick De’Mon Dunn, a former American football player, lost his mother tragically in an ambush when he was just 18 years old. Since then, his life has never been the same.
What Happened To Warrick Dunn’s Mother?
Betty Smothers, a police officer, was killed in 1993 while working off-duty. She was Warrick Dunn mother.
Smothers escorted a grocery store manager to a bank late at night after she finished her shift so she could make a deposit. Unfortunately, they were attacked by two armed thieves, and Dunn’s mother was killed.
Although the killers of Betty were given prison terms for their crimes, Dunn’s legal battle was difficult. One of the murderers, Kevan Brumfield, who had been given the death penalty in 2016, was resentenced to life in prison after the court found that he was mentally incapable of receiving the death penalty.
Dunn, though, did not think the murderer was mentally ill. Henri Broadway, another of his mother’s killers, also requested a new trial from the court. Dunn responded to the situation by saying,
“The court will decide Mr. Broadway’s destiny, therefore I will stop here. He is no longer able to control me or my family. When I forgiven him and Kevan Brumfield years ago, I regained that power.”
Dunn frequently posts messages to his social media accounts in honor of his mother. Dunn posted a tribute to his mother on Instagram on the occasion of her birthday with the following message:
“I’ll never forget the hardships my mother had trying to support her family on her own. She inspires all I do and gives me the motivation to keep having an impact. From your six children, happy birthday, mom. I adore you and am desperately missing you.”
His Siblings
Dunn’s life was flipped upside down by his mother’s passing because he was left in charge of taking care of his siblings. He took up the role of parent to his two sisters and three brothers, a total of five younger siblings.
When discussing his experiences as a dad, Dunns says,
“The times I was able to take care of my siblings were probably some of my most fulfilling experiences as a father figure. I was able to provide them everything that a parent could give to their children. I genuinely made an effort to provide them what they needed for a normal life.”
His siblings are now all settled into their separate homes and lives.
