Voddie was born to African-American parents on March 11, 1969. He was brought up in a non-religious single-parent home in Los Angeles, California. He did, however, become a Christian when he was 18 years old.

At New Mexico State University, Voddie was a tight end for the varsity football team. Later, he changed schools to Houston, Texas Rice University.

He gave up on his aspirations of playing professional football, though, and enrolled at Houston Baptist University after experiencing a religious awakening.

He majored in Sociology and Christianity, and from the prestigious Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas, he later obtained his Master of Divinity.
