Professional Playing Career of Todd Bowles
Bowles was signed by the Washington Redskins on May 7, 1986, as an undrafted free agent. He was first approached by seven NFL teams, but he felt Redskins would be the best fit.
Bowles immediately signed his first professional contract, which included a $9000 signing bonus. Todd had to contend with fierce competition right away to earn a spot on the team.
In training camp, he similarly made an impression on the coach to land the free safety position. Raphel Cherry wasn’t chosen until after Bowles in the roster for the regular season.
He had uneven performances during his rookie NFL season, though. He had to battle Curtis Jordan for the job as a result.
On September 8, 1987, the Redskins fired Jordan and gave Todd Bowles the free safety position for one more year. In Super Bowl XXII, Todd Bowles benefited the team as the starting free safety.
In the end, the Washington Redskins easily captured the championship. Bowles had trouble maintaining consistent play throughout the whole 1988 season.
