Tim Kurkjian began working as a journalist as soon as he had his diploma. In 1978, he landed his first job at the Washington Star. In 1981, he briefly worked in the Baltimore News American after quitting his employment there.
Later, in 1981, he worked as a Texas Rangers beat reporter for Dallas Morning News. He acquired baseball reporting skills while working there before leaving in 1985.
