John Sturgill Simpson was born on June 8, 1978, in the Kentucky town of Jackson, Breathitt County, United States of America. His given name, Sturgill, is taken from his grandma granny’s surname, which is derived from Wurtland, Kentucky, which is likewise in the United States of America.
Simpson is the sole child of his father, a Kentucky State Police Officer who previously worked covertly in the heroin trade, and his mother, a computer operator. Simpson’s family moved to Versailles, just outside Lexington, because of his father’s employment, and he attended Woodford County High School in the United States of America.
His mother’s family is derived from coal miners, and he is the only man on her mother’s side of the family who does not work in a mineshaft or a deep mine.
Throughout his academic career, Simpson described himself as a “not-so-great student.” His parents split when he was in the seventh grade, and he peddled narcotics and dabbled with LSD throughout high school. He graduated from Woodford High School before joining the US Navy in his final year.
