With the exception of the years 1996 to 1999, when he worked solely for CBS, he has been with the network since 1989 and is currently a top play-by-play commentator for ESPN’s college football and college basketball events.

The sports guru has been providing ESPN networks with baseball, college basketball, college football, NBA, NHL, and NCAA announcements since 2000. He is the son of The Boston Globe’s longtime sportswriter Will McDonough. Will was born in 1935 and passed away in Boston, Massachusetts, where he was born, from a heart attack in 2003.

Ryan (born 1979) and Terry (born 1965), Sean’s brothers, also have distinguished careers in professional athletics.

For the NFL’s Arizona Cardinals, Terry is the vice president of player personnel, and Ryan is the general manager of the NBA’s Phoenix Sun.

The three McDonough brothers were the subject of an HBO Real Sports profile back in September 2017. In reference to his entire family, Sean once told the Arizona Republic, “We live and die with each other’s accomplishments.”
