On April 19, 1991, in New York City, New York, Russ Antoin Smith was born. His father, Russell Smith, and mother, Paulette A. O’Neal, welcomed him into the world at NY Presbyterian Hospital.
Russ was a boisterous and mischievous child. He used to dance with a tuna fish-like tail shake. He earned the moniker “tuna fish” at that time.
His mother was a stay-at-home mom, while his father, Russell Smith, ran the hoops-themed Big Russ Barbershop in Harlem.
Russ attributes most of his development to his father. The power forward might consider giving up after the turbulent journey that led him to where he is now. But his father encouraged him and made sure he persisted.

On June 26, 2014, Smith was selected by the Philadelphia 76ers as the 47th overall choice in the NBA draft. However, the New Orleans Pelicans received his rights in exchange for Pierre Jackson.
Smith found it offensive that NBA teams had doubts about his ability to play point guard and that some of the top draft prospects shied away from working out with him.
He signed his rookie scale contract with the Pelicans on July 15, 2015, but six months later he was moved to the Memphis Grizzlies.
The Delaware 87ers of the NBA Development League signed Smith on January 13, 2016. He had a stellar debut for the 87ers, coming off the bench to score a team-best 37 points in 28 minutes.
He was chosen as the NBA D-League Performer of the Week as a result. It was Smith’s first career honor. In addition to recording a triple-double for the first time in his career, he scored 65 points, a D-League high.
But regrettably, he was cut loose by the 87ers on March 29, 2016, following a season-ending injury diagnosis.
Smith committed to playing with China’s Luoyang Zhonghe during the 2017 NBL season on June 3. In his first game, he recorded three steals and 62 points.
Smith finished with 81 points, 8 rebounds, and 7 assists. Later, he committed to play for the 2017–18 CBA season with the Fujian Sturgeons.
